RA Highlights: Meet Shannon Spencer
Lab group: Dr. Stephen Ogle
Time with NREL: Started in August, 2005 as an hourly
Research interest / skills: I enjoy using a diverse set of data science approaches to process and understand data sets for ecological, climate, and greenhouse gas emissions research. I am always eager to enhance my current understanding and learn new skills and enjoy taking the occasional course work as an employee. I strongly emphasize data quality control, documentation, and efficiency in my work. My original aspiration when I came to CSU was to investigate the use of remote sensing products in ecosystem problems and I hope to continue my efforts to potentially complete my PhD work that got side-tracked due to personal and financial reasons. Overall, I enjoy working in an academic environment on important problems, especially global change issues.
Hobbies / personal interests: I spend much of my personal time with my wife & kids (when they are agreeable–Kyle (12) & Jordan (17)) hiking, biking, spinning (or trying to get some moderate exercise!) and just being outside. We also enjoy visiting breweries and wineries and especially going on biking trips that visit these thirsty establishments. Occasionally, we brew our own beer or cider from our two apple trees. We have 2 cats (Beatrix Potter & Sherlock) and 2 dogs (Primrose Everdog & Violet Beauregarde) that require much attention, and my wife has 10000+ pet bees (I won’t name them here) that she wrangles to produce honey. My extended family owns a KOA campground in New Hampshire, so I am often visiting my parents arguing about the best way to manage the campground and get in a few hikes to my childhood-favorite Mt. Chocorua in the White Mountain National Forest. I enjoy listening to Bluegrass & Folk music (much to the dismay of my wife) and hope to someday take back up my fiddle. We tend to spend too much money on theatre productions at the Candlelight Dinner Theater and the Denver Performing Arts Center. As a family we enjoy visiting Florida and the ocean and recently purchased a small vacation home in Venice, Florida to get more sun & surf & grouper sandwiches!
